Brine Disposal: The Environmental Question Every Coastal Project Faces

Every SWRO plant produces a concentrated reject brine stream (roughly 40-50% of intake volume at typical recovery rates) alongside the fresh water output, and how that brine is discharged is one of the most heavily scrutinized aspects of coastal permitting. Proper design uses diffuser systems that rapidly dilute the brine back to near-ambient salinity within a small mixing zone, rather than a simple pipe discharge that can create a persistent high-salinity plume harmful to local marine life near the outfall. Is desalinated water safe for drinking?
